Bea’s Buzz for Friday

Last Thursday Bea and her hubby dragged themselves out of bed at 4 in the morning so Bea could catch the 5:20 a.m. bus to Chicago to visit her daughter.  Arrival time in Chicago was 10:15 a.m. Bea planned on spending the whole day exploring the local neighborhood until her daughter got home from work.

The train was chugging along so smoothly, Bea texted Mr. B., bragging that she’d sure to be reaching Union Station on time! A few minutes later, that fantasy came to a quick halt, along with the train.

Just outside of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Amtrak #351 slowed to a crawl (a bad sign) then stopped, in the middle of nowhere.  The conductor announced that there would be a delay, due to some kind of incident occurring on the tracks ahead.  Even worse, he didn’t know when we’d get back “on track” to our destination.

Now I’m going to share a little secret:  Bea is not a patient person.  And as the train sat there on the tracks, Bea recalled a train delay several years before, when on her way to Chicago with family, the six hour train ride turned into ten l-o-n-g hours. Bea, a type A personality, tends to get wound up and ticked off in these types of situations.   

This time, however, Bea just happened to be reading the most current edition of Oprah magazine, and it just happened to be open to an article titled Hang Loose, which wasn’t about going bra-less.  This article was about r-e-l-a-x-i-n-g, and Bea had just read the #3 tip:  “Relax into whatever’s happening.”  (Coincidence?  I think not).  The point of that tip is that what happens in any given moment is not necessarily in our control.  What is in our control is how we deal with it.  (You know, that whole attitude thing).  

Not only that, but a very kind lady across the aisle, travelling with her husband and daughter, offered Bea some cherries and little cracker sandwiches to make the delay more palatable!  This lady was obviously prepared for this kind of occurrence, and made the best of it by being nice to others.  

This was an “ah-ha” moment for Bea, sitting on this stopped train (the delay was a couple of hours).  Instead of reacting in her usual type-A way, she ate her snacks, finished the Oprah article, listened to music on her Ipod (and managed not to sing aloud to the songs, knowing that she would frighten her fellow train passengers with her voice) and started reading a book she’d brought along.  Ahhh, serenity now. By the way, Bea had a great time in Chicago.

Bea’s recent efforts to get out of a blue mood led her to thinking of ways to perk up Bea Boomer’s Wellness.  

As a result, Bea is buzzing about two new pages she’s adding, which will be available on Tuesday, June 2nd.

  • Vital Aging Tips  will provide you with quick tips for health and wellness as you grow older (we’re not just “getting old,” you know – we are growing, even as we age.)  For Bea, that’s the key to vital aging.  This page will be updated with a new tip every Tuesday.  
  • Vital Aging Links will provide you with healthy living resources for your quick reference, separated by categories such as healthy eating, exercise, brain fitness, and the like.  Bea is still figuring out the best way to develop this page (maybe you have some ideas – please email beaboomer@gmail.com or comment if you do, or if you’ve found great links that Bea can add to this page)

Lost – One Sense of Humor

Last Seen – May 10th, 2015

Please help Bea!  She’s lost her sense of humor. Really.  It’s causing her to take herself WAY too seriously and life seems so darned difficult!  Hopefully, she’s just misplaced it, like she misplaces her car keys and such (you know, this aging thing).  If Bea has lost her sense of humor completely, she’s simply doomed to a miserable life.

 She last saw her sense of humor while reading the Sunday newspaper. Silly woman, instead of checking out the Comics section, a gloom-and-doom headline caught her eye and just like that, her sense of humor walked out the door.

Then she noticed more bad news, and more and more and yikes, her sense of humor was running like heck down the road just to get away from Bea’s crabby self.

Bea has to find her sense of humor as soon as possible.  Heck, everyone knows that humor makes our life struggles less difficult to bear and eases our stress.  

Laughter:

  • Relaxes us
  • Boosts our immune system
  • Releases endorphins (you know, those “feel good” chemicals)
  • Protects our heart
  • Helps defuse arguments
  • Enhances our friendships 
  • And so much more!

Bea has searched everywhere and now she’s getting desperate. There’s only one thing she can do! She needs to make herself laugh! But how?

America’s largest and oldest community-based network for mental health.

Founded in 1909, Mental Health America’s goal is to promote mental health by means of prevention, early identification/intervention, and care/treatment of mental health conditions

Within the site’s Living Well link, you’ll find resources for: 

  • Living your life well: top 10 tools, stress screener, fast facts about stress and more.
  • Living your life well on campus: special resources for college students.
  • Living your life well at work: work/life balance, signs of a healthy workplace, and more.
  • Complementary medicine:  alternative medicine options for mental health conditions.

Within the Finding Help link, you’ll find:

Secrets of Centenarians

Want to live to be 100?  You may want to take some advice from the centenarians who were polled (along with 65-year-old baby boomers) who were polled last year in UnitedHealth Group’s 9th annual 100@100 SurveyThe survey examined their health “secrets,” along with their attitudes about aging and their lifestyles. 

Not surprisingly, both the 65-year-old group and the 100 year olds feel younger than their chronological age.  While this fact may surprise younger people (you know, the ones who think 30 is like, beyond ancient), it’s certainly not news to Bea, who is a couple years this side of 60 and feels about 35! 

The “secrets” that the centenarians and baby boomers revealed aren’t too surprising, either. According to those polled:  

  • A positive attitude, and an ability to laugh at life, are key factors to good health in old age. (This has been proven again and again in scientific research – see below for additional reading)
  • Taking a pro-active approach to health by getting annual physicals, along with annual eye exams is another key to maintaining health and wellness. 
  • Finally:  Exercise, exercise, exercise! Good for both brain and body.  Both the 65-year-old group and the centenarians got regular exercise – which included strength training, walking, biking, even running. 

Then again, longevity could just be a matter of plain old luck.

Fun Website to Try: Kizoa

Part of Bea’s vital aging quest is looking for something new and fun on the Internet.  She recently discovered a cool website, Kizoa.  While googling “creating slideshows,” Kizoa popped up in her search.  

At Kizoa, you can create collages, slideshows and videos.  

Additional options include: 

  • Photo editing (choice of 200 frames and 80 filters)
  • Prints, posters, personalized photo gifts

You use your own photos, downloaded from your computer or Facebook.  For collages and slideshows, you can use templates or start from scratch.  You can also easily add text, a variety of elements, backgrounds and textures.  You can even add music to your slideshow, using Kizoa’s musical options or downloading your own tunes. 

Options for saving your creations depend on your membership:

  • Email
  • Sharing on Facebook or Twitter
  • Convert a slideshow to video and add to YouTube
  • Computer download
  • Embedding into blog or website
  • DVD

You can join Kizoa for free, but this is misleading, since the free version has very limited options.  Upgrades range from $20 to $129.These are “lifetime” costs. Bea paid $64.99 for the “Premium DVD” version, since she wanted to add collages and slideshows to her blog, post to Facebook (or Twitter) and save her creations onto a DVD. 

This is also a great way to make use of all those photos you have lying around, on or off your computer! Bea has thousands of old-fashioned photos in boxes (since her mom died, she’s the photo keeper and has photos from as long ago as the 1930’s). She’s been scanning them onto her computer (a slow, tedious process) and Kizoa is helping her design some fun mementos.  For example, this is the first collage she created, for what would have been her mom’s 100th birthday, if she was still living. (Mind you, this is pretty basic – there are a lot more elements that can be added to a collage)

So if you have a ton of photos and are looking for a creative outlet, you might want to give Kizoa a try!  For Bea, the fun she’s having with this site is well-worth the cost.

Suggestion:  Use the tutorials to easily learn how to use all the features on the site for your creations.

 

 

Why Every Dog Should Own a Human

www.kizoa.com_collage_2015-04-06_18-45-29The Goscicki Family Dogs – Sam, Lab mix (passed away in 1999) and Desi, Lhasa Apso/Bichon mix (still with us)

The Goscicki family dog, Desi (the dog who can spell) recently provided Bea with his philosophy for living la vida doggy, explaining why every dog needs a human.   

  • Humans think that the dog is their pet. Desi begs to differ.  The male human cleans up Desi’s poop.  Who owns whom? 
  • A human is a dog’s most important asset in a thunderstorm or during those dreaded fireworks.  (It’s either human cuddling or a tranquilizer – Desi prefers the human touch). 
  • A human is a dog’s date magnet.  That cute miniature poodle down the street simply can’t resist Desi’s male human.
  • Table scraps. Need Desi say more?
  • Road trip!  Window down! Warm breeze blowing through my fur ~ Wait . . . hold on . . . is that the Vet’s office?  Damn. The humans fooled Desi again.
  • Ahhh, the week-end nap with the female human.  There’s nothing better than cuddling up with your human (unless, of course, that cute little poodle decides to stop by) 

And of course, not only does every dog need a human – every human needs a dog!

5 Ways to Add Fun to your Walk

  • Walk with a like-minded friend, or better yet, join a walking club (no clubs in your area?  Start one up!)
  • Walk your dog.  Don’t have a dog buddy?  Volunteer to walk a dog at your local animal shelter
  • Find a walking trail at your local park or county park.  
  • Invest in an Ipod and download some fitness music or your favorite rock and roll tunes – you may want to start dancing your way down the sidewalk!
  • Walk at your local mall and do some window shopping at the same time.

Does anyone have any other ideas about adding fun to a walk?

Bea has seen several of those YouTube videos, with a variety of everyday people lip synching to Taylor Swift’s song, Shake it Off.  

While enjoying the version sung by two country boys (one of the best ones, in Bea’s opinion), she had a smashing idea!  Bea decided to rewrite the song’s lyrics to reflect what vital aging is all about.  Bea’s contemplating a YouTube performance – but she may need voice lessons first!
